Choose an Attached Carport to Protect Your Vehicle

Many existing homes do not have garages and adding an addition for a garage can be cost prohibitive, a great alternative is an attached carport. These open shelters are easy to construct and will protect you and your vehicle from the worst of the elements like rain and snow. Many carport designs will be relatively inexpensive, especially compared to the full cost of building a large storage shed or traditional garage.

Sometimes attached carports are referred to as lean to carports and must be installed next to a home or other static, sturdy building. This is because these carports cannot be freestanding. This type of carport can be made of almost any type of material including metal, wood, or vinyl. Sometimes a carport kit will be made entirely of one type of material, but usually you will find that carports are made of some combination of materials. Of course, the type and quality of the construction materials will directly impact the cost. Cost is also dependent on the carport size and style.

Because construction and installation of most carports is fairly simplistic, you should be able to get a carport installed in the space of a weekend, even less if you enlist a friend or two to help. Some people opt to enclose one or two of the sides with vinyl, wood or aluminium siding to offer further protection to the vehicle. The process of attaching the carport to your home can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it is important to read and understand the installation instructions before completing the installation.

Included in the many advantages of an attached carport is protection from rain, the sun and weather elements and a lower investment than building a full garage. Today’s carports are often very low maintenance and will require little upkeep once installed. By installing a carport now, you will increase your property value when or if you decide to sell your home. As with any home improvement project, check local regulations before beginning construction.
