Termites have the second largest population of insect on the planet, only second to ants. So with such large numbers they are constantly a problem to home and building owners. In fact, termites have been known to cause more than $5 billion dollars in damage in a single year. All too often people leave it till they have already done damage before they call the termite controller in. However, there are some signs you can look for to detect these pests early, before they destroy your structures.
The two main types of termites we see here in the U.S. are the subterranean and drywood termites. Although each species of termites leave their own distinct sign from food foraging, there are some basic signs you can look for in these two types of termites.
The first sign is a deteriorated look to any part of your structure that’s made of wood. Keep an eye on all wood pieces, even if the wood has been treated, these treatments wear off with time. With the deteriorated look, the wood will most likely sound hollow if knocked on lightly. Although there might not be much damage seen from the outside, you need to be careful because these pieces can be very weak. Termites like to eat wood from the inside out. This leaves very little evidence of destruction to be seen from the outside.
Check for thin cracks along the base of any beams or frames that meet the ground. Also, you will tend to see small accumulations of soil and possibly even droppings in these areas. Don’t confuse this with dirt that has been swept in this direction or deposited by the wind. The best way to keep an eye on this particular situation is to make sure the area is completely clean and then watch it over the next week. If that area is the only one with an accumulation of dirt, you may have a termite problem.
If the termites are eating through the wood near the surfaces you will see cracks and fissures in the paint or the wood itself. Usually, these will appear near the corners of the structure or frame. Cracks are more common than holes or pitting. If you have signs of pits or holes you may have another problem with worms or beetles. Do not hesitate to call in the local pest control company, they normally have seen every type of bug and will know exactly what your issue is and how to fix it
